This week in PDF has seen the release of a Mac-compatible version of a digital magazine production product, the launch of a secure PDF delivery service, and a pair of new RIPs that incorporate version 2 of Adobe's PDF Print Engine.
First up, 3D Issue has announced the launch of the first ever Mac version of their digital magazine production software. Unlike other providers, who offer the digitization of print publications as a service, 3D Issue releases their solutions as software packages. While the developer had previously only offered Windows versions of its products, most design work for the print publishing is done with Macs. Consequently, the release will make the software a better fit for its intended user base. Finally, the last seven days has seen EFI release of a pair of RIPs for color proofing and production printing. Respectively entitled Colorproof XF and Fiery XF v4.0, the new RIPs incorporate Adobe PDF Print Engine 2 (APPE 2), Adobe's next generation, full-featured printing software. The update provides RIP users with native integration into APPE 2 workflows. By simply ticking the Adobe PDF Print Engine box, users can process all PDF files with APPE 2, while other file types can still be handled by the CPSI Interpreter.
