In the last seven days, Adobe has improved the conversion of design files to PDF, Mission3 has integrated PDF creation into its platform tools and pdf2image allows for sharper images from PDF sources.

First up, Adobe Systems has announced the immediate availability of a free download for Adobe Acrobat 3D that includes updated 3D computer-aided design (CAD) translators. These add to Acrobat 3D support for the latest versions of major CAD file formats, facilitating the conversion of 3D models from those formats to the more secure and portable PDF. The new translators incorporate technology Adobe acquired with Trade & Technologies France (TTF) -- a company whose technology is used by various CAD, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and computer-aided engineering (CAE) developers. More information is available at Adobe.com.

In other PDF creation news, the Phoenix, Arizona-based Mission3 has integrated standards-compliant PDF creation into its MissionFire and FastCrossing platform tools. PDFRenditioning, the new application, allows for the automated conversion of several hundred file types while supporting Life Sciences specific output standards. Output files are then associated with their source documents in MissionFire, which simplifies document requests of all kinds. For more information on PDFRenditioning, check out the Mission3 Web site.

To round out the week, Visual Integrity Technologies has announced the availability of a free trial version of its image extraction solution. pdf2image 6.5 converts graphical PDF content, allowing users to extract sharp images from PDF documents. Users of Microsoft Office can specify the resolution and dimensions of the resulting JPEG, GIF or PNG files. The product is also available bundled with companion program pdf2picture, which breaks down a PDF file into its individual objects and text for further editing. That's it for this week. Watch this space!
