This week in PDF: PDF validation and repair

April 02, 2009

This week in PDF has seen updates to a PDF/A validation tool and a PDF repair application, while another vendor has released an optional PDF/A-related component. Staying in the same themes of quality assurance and compliance, a standards body has released a new suite for testing PDF workflows.

First up, callas software has released version 1.3 of its pdfaPilot product. The software includes functions for testing, validation and proofing, along with allowing the conversion of existing PDF files to PDF/A. New to the latest version, defective and corrupt PDF files can now be repaired, and PDF-to-PDF/A conversion functionality has been enhanced. The product comes in desktop and server versions. For more information about the product, visit the official company website.

In other PDF/A news, LuraTech has launched a new optional module for the LuraDocument PDF Compressor. The new offering, known as Born Digital, converts digital documents such as Microsoft Office and PDF documents into PDF/A format for long-term archiving. The Born Digital module enables users to easily batch process digital files, in the same way that scanned paper documents can be processed with the PDF Compressor. More on the new Born Digital module can be found at the LuraTech site.

Still on the topic of PDF validation, the Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG) has released the latest version of its PDF testing suite. The Ghent Output Suite 3 is the latest set of Ghent Workgroup tests to determine whether PDFs will be processed as expected in real-world production environments. The suite can be used to test both design and production PDF workflows, and the new version adds testing for White Overprint, Rendering Intent, ICC-based Overprint and Source Profile consideration. The Ghent Workgroup has also made adjustments to all of the test files and documentation to make them clearer and easier to understand. Finally, another product updated this week was DataNumen's PDF recovery application. Enhancements in the new version include the implementation of a improved repair engine and GUI and support for Microsoft Windows Vista. Advanced PDF Repair is designed to enable users to scan and repair corrupted or damaged Acrobat PDF documents, recovering valuable data. With Advanced PDF Repair 2.0, a user can find and select the PDF files to be repaired on the local computer. The software also allows users to repair PDF files stored on corrupted media, including floppy disks and flash drives. For more information, visit the Advanced PDF Repair product page.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
