This week in PDF has seen the release of a standalone Java-based PDF viewer and a PDF creation utility, along with the signing of a distribution deal for the Adobe PDF Print Engine SDK.

First up, Big Faceless Organization (BFO) has announced the launch of the standalone Java PDF Viewer. The product is a Swing component for displaying PDF Documents in Applets or applications. Additional features include printing, saving, search/selection, forms, bookmarks, reorderable thumbnails, annotations and more. Full support is provided for PDFs up to Adobe Acrobat 9, and the Viewer can also be controlled from JavaScript. Language support is provided in English, French, Spanish, German, Japanese and Chinese with more languages to be added shortly. For more information, visit the official BFO website.

Also released this week was iOMM's free PDF converter. POKATreader allows one-click creation of "flip-style" PDF ebooks. Users are also able to simply drag and drop PDF files into POKATreader software and instantly view documents on-screen as ebooks. The product also has an Auto Library feature, which allows users to access and backup PDF files from a single location. Any PDF opened in POKATreader is automatically added to the POKATreader library. The software also allows in-page, one-click zoom, different visual customizing details, and various printing options. To find out more or download a free copy of the software, check out www.pokat.net.

Finally, Datalogics announced this week that it has inked a new pact with Adobe Systems to distribute the Adobe PDF Print Engine SDK. The deal is actually an extension of Datalogics' existing distribution agreement with Adobe, under which Datalogics licenses various other Adobe technologies, including the Adobe PDF Library. Under the terms of the agreement, Datalogics will provide licensing, support and maintenance services to vendors looking to embed Adobe PDF Print Engine software into their applications to facilitate print workflows. Adobe PDF Print Engine is built upon open standards including PDF for describing content, ICC profiles to characterize color information, and JDF for job control. Additionally, Adobe PDF Print Engine can natively render jobs in the PDF/X-4 and PDF/X-5 formats, which support live transparency as well as layers and external Reference Xobjects. Interested parties can visit the Datalogics website to find out more.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!

Collating PDFs using JavaScript

Despite the numerous benefits, there can be potential issues with the conversion of paper documents into electronic archives. When scanning paper pages into PDF, it's possible to end up with the odd- and even-numbered pages in separate PDF files. It can be very time-consuming to collate them manually, but there is an easier way. Sean Stewart explains.
