This week in PDF sees updated developer tools for PDF creation and content extraction, while a new PDF editing tool takes best-in-show honors.
First up, Enfocus Software's recently released native PDF editing tool has been awarded a Best of Show gong at ON DEMAND in the Document Creation category. The high-end desktop application is engineered specifically for graphic arts, and supports pixel-level viewing and editing, final editing on impositions, and PDF 1.6 separations. Neo also retains and utilizes all Certified PDF file information, thereby guaranteeing that all changes are traceable and conform to printer specifications. From editing to creation now, and SautinSoft has announced the release of its .NET component for converting RTF or TXT content into PDF. PDF Metamorphosis 1.1 .NET retains or converts RTF formatting information such as text justification, images, tables and hyperlinks. The product also ships with code samples, along with RTF and PDF documents for testing purposes. More information can be found on the SautinSoft Web site.
Also on the developer front, Big Faceless Organization (BFO) has released a new version of its Java PDF Library. Version 2.7.9 is primarily a bugfix release and includes improvements to FDF, XFDF and XFA handling as well as JBIG2 encoding. The new release includes support for JBIG2 compression via an external encoder, complementing the JBIG2 decompression support also added in the last version. Despite the numerous benefits, there can be potential issues with the conversion of paper documents into electronic archives. When scanning paper pages into PDF, it's possible to end up with the odd- and even-numbered pages in separate PDF files.
