This week in PDF has seen a major update to a PDF information retrieval tool, while minor updates were released for a Java-based PDF library and a PDF forms solution.
First up, PDFlib GmbH has released a version 2.0 of its PDF information retrieval tool. PDFlib pCOS provides a simple and elegant facility for retrieving any information from a PDF document which is not part of the page contents. For example, PDF metadata, interactive elements (links etc.), or page dimensions can easily be queried with pCOS. In addition to the new version of the software, PDFlib has also released a new pCOS Cookbook containing code samples to facilitate the retrieval of various interesting objects from PDF documents. In other news, UNIVERSE Software GmbH has released the latest version of its PDF forms solution. pdf-FormServer v4.5 allows users to save filled out PDF forms while keeping form fields editable. The software allows all filled out PDF forms can be saved locally either as FDF, XFDF (for further electronic processing) or directly to PDF. Filled forms be read with the form data included, altered at a later date or sent via email. Full product details can be found at pdf-office.com.
Finally, the London-based Big Faceless Organization (BFO) has released an update to its Java PDF Library and Java PDF Viewer. Version 2.8.5 of the PDF Library includes several bug fixes along with improvements for documents saved with Acrobat Reader Usage Rights. Specifically, the Library can now read and write PDF documents without damaging these rights. Various refinements have also been made to the PDF Viewer, which now supports LiveConnect for communication with JavaScript, while memory requirements have also been drastically reduced. Despite the numerous benefits, there can be potential issues with the conversion of paper documents into electronic archives. When scanning paper pages into PDF, it's possible to end up with the odd- and even-numbered pages in separate PDF files.
