Karl's Corner: Drawing a blank made easy

July 26, 2006

Editor's Note: Formerly CEO of Planet PDF, Karl De Abrew is now the CEO of Debenu ( -- maker of the Quick PDF Library (formerly iSEDQuickPDF | QuickPDF) (, a powerful royalty-free PDF developer SDK, and Benubird Pro, the easy-to-use personal document management system.

ARTS PDF and Planet PDF are both divisions of BinaryThing

Well, Owen Wilson was in town here in Melbourne, Australia yesterday to promote his new movie, "You, me and Dupree". Whilst I missed out on being invited to the premiere and the red carpet roll-out, I did receive a pretty nifty AcroTip from PDF A-list celebrity and conference producer extraordinaire, Carl Young, that I thought I should make special mention of.

Now, I've always been a fan of being able to create a blank page within Adobe Acrobat -- usually for the purpose of fiddling around with forms or JavaScript related stuff. I even helped guide our sister division @ ARTS PDF to author a free "Blank Page/File New" plug-in which provided this functionality for Acrobat 5.0 and above.

But now Carl tells me that this functionality is built into Acrobat itself -- it's dead easy -- just hold down the Shift key and choose File > Create PDF > From Blank Page.

It's clearly a popular feature... I've just noticed that another familiar face -- Planet PDF Contributing Editor Duff Johnson -- is also a fan, and posted it in his user community blog, "Duff Johnson's PDF Perspective".

If you want to get hold of more of Carl's tips and info on his PDF conferences, you can sign up for his newsletter here (it's on the bottom left hand side of the page).

Have you found any particularly cool and/or obscure features in Acrobat? Post your comments in the Planet PDF Forum Talkback section.

OK, so you want to stamp your document. Maybe you need to give reviewers some advice about the document's status or sensitivity. This tip from author Ted Padova demonstrates how to add stamps with the Stamp Tool along with related comments.
