This week in PDF has seen updates to PDF solutions for document comparison, digital handwriting capture and print workflow configuration, along with the release of Adobe's latest Acrobat software development kit (SDK).

First up, DocsCorp has announced at ILTA 08 an upgrade release to its document comparison software. pdfDocs compareDocs 3.1 integrates into Adobe Reader, MS Office applications including MS Outlook and document management systems (e.g. Interwoven, NetDocuments, Open Text and WORLDOX) to accurately and reliably compare two versions of a document for differences. The new version is also compatible with MS Office 2007 DOCX file format. To find out more, check out www.docscorp.com.

Also launched this week was Talario's handwriting capture utility. The Xpaper PDF Digital Writing Kit is a business process enhancement system for small- and medium-sized organizations, utilizing proven digital writing technology that enables ambulatory care facilities, small physician practices, insurance agents, financial planners, loan officers and others to create and capture written materials electronically. Priced at $399.00, the system records handwriting on documents or forms, creates searchable PDFs upon docking and controls where the information will be sent. It works with documents printed from any Windows application including desktop PC software as well as Internet-enabled applications. More information can be found at the official vendor site.

In update news, Screen has released the latest version of its JDF-enabled, PDF fully automated prepress production workflow. Incorporating the Adobe PDF Print Engine, TrueFlow SE v6.0 builds upon the previous version's features by offering improved printing quality and productivity. It features standard file checking, OPI support, trapping and imposition and many other prepress functions. The product is designed both to drive optimized computer-to-plate (CtP) production and digital printing presses, and to provide an advanced automated and streamlined workflow environment. Trueflow SE is enables existing users to move easily from a PDF and PostScript workflow into a JDF-based environment and achieve seamless communication with Management Information Systems (MIS). To find out more, check out the vendor website.

Finally, Adobe Systems has now posted the Acrobat 9 SDK on its website. The SDK will allow developers to write plug-ins and other programs to interact with Acrobat 9. According to the SDK's "About this Help" page, the SDK should assist developers:

  • Understand the Acrobat SDK and its development technologies
  • Writing scripts to extend the functionality of Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
  • Create plug-ins that are dynamically linked to and extend the functionality of Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
  • Create applications that directly create and manipulate PDF documents.
  • Write a separate application process that uses interapplication communication (IAC) to control Acrobat functionality.
  • Create an online collaboration review system.
  • Learn about 3D support in the Acrobat products.
  • Learn about PDF technology and recent standardization efforts.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
