This week in PDF sees the release of a new public beta for a PDF preflighting application, Adobe clarify its position on Vista support and an update to a developer tool for PDF content extraction.
First up, Markzware has released a public beta for the new version its established preflighting application. FlightCheck 6's refined interface includes automatic switching between PDF and Native files, which will cut down on manual set-up time. The new version is also optimized for use with PDF 1.6 and offers automatic switching of preflight rules. To find out more, visit the Markzware Web site.
Speaking of quality control, compatibility is surely a prerequisite for a smooth workflow. After some doubt as to Adobe's intentions with respect to Microsoft's latest operating system, Adobe has clarified its product compatibility for Vista. The news is encouraging. According to Adobe's FAQ, while Adobe Acrobat 8 and Adobe Reader 8 are not officially supported in Vista, they do run, albeit with some "known issues". Other products such as Photoshop Elements 5.0.2 and Photoshop Premier Elements 3.0.2 are fully Vista-compatible. Update compatibility patches for the Acrobat family are scheduled for the first half of 2007. More information can be found on Adobe's official FAQ.
Finally, Massachusetts-based Snowtide Informatics Systems, Inc. has released an update to its PDF content extraction API. PDFTextStream v2.0.5 is a bug fix release that improves the quality extracted text. Specifically, the update offers improved handling of text spacing and resolves a problem where text from adjacent lines would be inappropriately intermingled. In addition, v2.0.5 no longer requires new users to request an evaluation license file in order to fully test PDFTextStream before purchase. The v2.0.5 update is free
