This week in PDF has seen the release of an Adobe-Yahoo joint project to deliver ads in PDF documents, the passing of an ISO ballot for PDF 1.7 and an update to a TIFF-to-PDF conversion SDK.

First up, Adobe Systems and Yahoo! have launched Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo!, an opt-in service that enables online commercial publishers to include contextual, text-based ads next to PDF-based content. The new service allows publishers to generate revenue, with Yahoo! providing access to its network of advertisers. For advertisers, Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo! extends reach by delivering advertising across a new content channel, while retaining web-based advertising's performance-tracking capabilities. Ads for Adobe PDF Powered by Yahoo! is available initially as a beta program. Check out the official web page for more detailed information or to apply for the beta program.

In other Adobe-relevant news, Adobe's Jim King has announced in his "Inside PDF" blog that the recent ISO ballot for PDF 1.7 has passed. In his words, "Adobe has received word that the Ballot for approval of PDF 1.7 to become the ISO 32000 Standard (DIS) has passed by a vote of 13::1." While this result adds some formal weight to PDF's long-standing status as the de-facto document standard, there's a lot of work ahead for Jim and the Adobe team. Although the ballot was passed by a clear margin, the ISO member nations attached a total of 205 comments and issues which will need to be resolved before the formal acceptance of the PDF standard. For more information, check out Jim's original blog post.

Last but not least, X360 Software has updated its SDK for converting TIFF images into PDF documents. X360 TIFF to PDF Image ActiveX OCX allows developers to add TIFF-to-PDF conversion functionality into their applications. It supports Compressed, Group3, Group4, PackBits, Run Length Encoded, Color, Grayscale, 8-bit, 16-bit, 32-bit and various other TIFF image formats. Developers can either build their own solutions or use the provided EXE, DLL or library. More information can be found on X360 Software's official web site.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
