This week in PDF: Size does matter -- for E-Filing, at least

This week in PDF sees the release of a brand-new RTF-to-PDF conversion tool, an online application for E-Filing federal court documents and another vendor announcing Acrobat 8 compatibility.

First up, Russian company SautinSoft has released a text-to-PDF conversion widget. The PDF Metamorphosis .NET component allows users to convert text or RTF documents to PDF format, retaining formatting information such as text justification, header/footer, images and tables. Creating PDFs is really an essential function these days, but in order to E-File in U.S. Federal Court, size is what really matters. According to a press release from Split Court, Inc., courts require that all pleadings, exhibits and other papers be filed electronically in PDF format, and have set a maximum file size for each document. Documents exceeding the maximum size in megabytes must be split into separate parts with each file below the maximum size allowed. Enter Split Court's new online solution, which lets lawyers automatically split large files into parts of the required size. More information on the service can be found on the Split Court Web site.

Finally, Visual Technology Services has now announced support for the Acrobat 8 family of products. The new version of its PDF3D-SDK content creation toolkit enables users to create document files containing interactive 3D graphics and to merge material from existing PDFs. Vendors now have the option of enhanced PLM workflow by combining PDF3D-SDK with Adobe Acrobat 8, while content Publishers can distribute 3D PDF files without recipients being forced to download a plug-in, separate viewer or file conversion application.
