This week in PDF has seen the announcement of updates to server-based PDF creation and manipulation applications, and a standards body has released a new set of guidelines in response to recent changes to MS Office and Acrobat.
First up, activePDF, Inc. has announced a pair of updates to its server-based PDF generation and manipulation solutions. The PDF creation product, activePDF DocConverter 2009, will initially be available in two editions: DocConverter 2009, and DocConverter 2009 Enterprise; DocConverter 2009 Clustered Edition is planned for release in Q4. Highlights of the update include: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 compatibility, support for 64-bit systems and Microsoft Office 2007 and faster "Intelligent PDF" conversions. activePDF's other pending update is the release of Portfolio 2009, a discounted software bundle that incorporates PDF creation, conversion and manipulation tools -- including DocConverter.
In other news, the Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG) has released a new set of best-practice guidelines, which it developed in response to recent changes to MS Office and Acrobat. The Guidelines cover image quality & color, fonts, transparency, PDF creation tools for Microsoft Office, creation of PDFs from other applications, and considerations for processing PDFs. The new Office Printing PDF Creator Guidelines are available for free download from the GWG website.
