This week in PDF sees the release of PrimeOCR 4.2, which offers improved PDF-processing performance, as another new member joins the Ghent PDF Workgroup and a time-bomb worm due to activate on Friday that will affect PDF and other documents.

Prime Recognition has announced an update to its PrimeOCR product. The new version boasts faster processing of image PDF files, retention of interactive elements such as bookmarks and initial view settings to cut down on the post-OCR workload. In addition, the new software can also be configured to skip files containing text, saving time and processor burn.

Dalim Software has joined the Ghent PDF Workgoup (GWG) -- an international organization of graphic arts industry associations, vendors, and observers, established to create, evaluate, and disseminate best practices, standards and specifications for publishing workflows. A full member of the CIP4 organization, Dalim has achieved several key industry certifications and its file creation applications are already fully compliant with all nine GWG vertical market PDF/X-1a PLUS specifications. This ensures secure and productive digital workflows for magazine advertising, newspaper advertising, commercial sheet offset, web offset, packaging, silkscreen, large format digital, and gravure printing.

Antivirus firms are warning of a destructive Windows worm that will begin wiping files on infected PCs this Friday (February 3.) 'Nyxem.e' has been spreading via infected emails and network shares. On the third of each month, the worm will activate 30 minutes after the computer is booted up and overwrite files based on their file extensions. PDF files will be affected, as will those with DOC, XLS, MDB, MDE, PPT, PPS, ZIP, RAR, PSD and DMP extensions. Corrupted files contain the text 'DATA Error [47 0F 94 93 F4 F5]'. The worm was first discovered on 16 January and has been variously named Blackworm, MyWife, Kama Sutra, Grew and CME-24.
