With the update to Acrobat 8.1, this week in PDF sees the release of a training package specifically relating to Acrobat 3D, a server-side password recovery solution and a new PDF creation tool.

First up, self-paced digital media and design training provider lynda.com has introduced Acrobat 3D Version 8 Essential Training. Acrobat 3D can solve incompatibility issues stemming from the use of many different 3D CAD formats by converting designs into the standard PDF format. In Acrobat 3D Version 8 Essential Training, Brian Wood teaches users how to create, convert, manipulate, and share 3D files using the key features of Adobe Acrobat 3D Version 8. Exercise files accompany the tutorials. Subscribers of lynda.com's Online Training Library can access Acrobat 3D Version 8 Essential Training via the Web, and a DVD version is scheduled for release later this month. For free online samples and more detailed product information, please visit lynda.com.

Working with PDF files is all very well, but what if you can't access them? UNIVERSE Software GmbH has developed a software package for removing the password protection on large batches of PDF documents. This functionality would presumably be useful for companies who receive large numbers of PDF files for further processing or printing, but cannot effectively work with the files due to password protection. pdf-Recover Server Edition removes the main PDF passwords automatically, leaving documents that can be used without limitations. The latest version can decrypt files encrypted at up to 128 bit AES. A free trial version in a single-workstation version is available for download from www.pdf-office.com.

Last but not least, soft Xpansion has released a desktop PDF creation tool along with its server-based companion product. In addition PDF creation, Office to PDF can transfer internal meta-settings of Office files (e.g. document information, references/links, table of contents etc.) into the resulting PDF document. The software also supports standard PDF functionality such as security functions, access rights management, image management and watermarks. For more, check out the soft Xpansion Web site.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
