Over the last month or so, Adobe has been earning column inches for all the wrong reasons, with security experts uncovering several vulnerabilities. This week in PDF, Adobe releases a fix for these issues and announces the formal release of a new service. To round out the week's news, Planet PDF welcomes a new major sponsor to the fold.

First up, security-conscious PDF users can breathe a sigh of relief as Adobe releases a patch to plug the recently-discovered holes in Adobe Reader's browser plug-ins. The most hyped of these vulnerabilities was covered last week in my editorial, along with the resulting panic running through parts of the security community. Installing the 7.0.9 patch released by Adobe will fix the problems, as will upgrading to version 8.x, which does not contain the vulnerabilities. Both versions of Adobe Reader can be downloaded from the Adobe Web site.

In other Adobe news, the software giant announced the commercial availability of its new Web-hosted service. Acrobat Connect, which Adobe describes as, "the first hosted web conferencing service to offer 'always-on' personal meeting rooms." The service allows users to meet online in real-time via Web-conferencing. Collaboration tools such as screen-sharing, whiteboarding, chat, video conferencing and audio conferencing are included with the service, provided for a monthly fee. For more information on Adobe Acrobat Connect and it's more powerful sibling, Acrobat Connect Professional, check out the Adobe Web site.

And, last but not least, Planet PDF welcomes Enfocus Software as its newest major sponsor. Enfocus is a leading brand in PDF and production automation technology, with products and technologies including PitStop Professional, Certified PDF, Instant PDF and Instant Barcode. More on Enfocus's products and solutions can be found at Enfocus.com.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
