As Apple plugs a swag of potential security holes in OS X, this week in PDF sees the release of updates to a PDF conversion suite and a Java-based PDF library.

First up, Apple has released an update to its OS X OS that patches 17 security vulnerabilities -- all potentially serious, according to a blog post by Ryan Naraine. The headline flaw was a bug in CoreGraphics, which could have been exploited to execute arbitrary code by tricking users into opening malicious PDF files. A breakdown of some of the key vulnerabilities and their solutions can be found on the FrSIRT (French Security Incident Response Team) Web site.

Moving on to conversion now, and Japanese company Recosoft Corporation has shipped an update to its PDF conversion tool. PDF2Office Professional v4.0 for Windows is a major upgrade to PDF2Office v2.5 Professional, a PDF-to-Office file formats conversion tool. The new version uses a Office 2007-style ribbon interface and is fully compatible with Windows Vista. The update boasts more than 400 new features and enhancements, including the capability to convert PDF documents to HTML formats. Full release details are available on the Recosoft Web site.

Finally, the Big Faceless Organization (BFO) has updated its Java PDF Library, including a completely revamped PDF Viewer package. The new viewer in the Big Faceless Java PDF Library v2.8 is designed around a modular architecture that allows it to be customized to function as either a PDF viewer or editor. This functionality can be further extended with user-coded extensions for custom PDF workflows. Visit the BFO Web site for a demonstration of the PDF Viewer.

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
