This week in PDF: Bitstream adds support for PDF/VT

May 20, 2010

This week in PDF has seen announcements relating to a pair of variable data printing solutions. Meanwhile, news has reached Planet PDF that an industry body dedicated to PDF/A has appointed a new chair.

First up, Pageflex has announced support for PDF/VT ("V" for Variable, "T" for Transactional), the emerging ISO standard for exchanging variable data publishing jobs. PDF/VT will be available with all Pageflex products with the next release coming this summer. PDF/VT is a PDF-based document-description format that is optimized for production of variable-data documents. The goal of this standard is to define a PDF-based format for describing variable-data documents in a way that will allow faster and more efficient production and consistent quality in the production of variable-data documents. The PDF/VT standard is currently under development by a committee of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

In other variable data printing news, Bytes Document Solutions and Mapsoft Computer Services have jointly announced the launch of Infigo GO Variable Data Printing. This standalone product is designed for printers who want variable data print functionality but do not want to use a full web-to-print service. The product's menu-driven system takes the printer step-by-step through the set up of a template. It allows dynamic control of a document including the formatting of images, text and colors. A printer can also incorporate a wide range of variable data fields so the end customer can personalize documents such as business cards, marketing collateral, greetings cards, invitations and calendars.

Finally, news has reached Planet PDF that Appligent Document Solutions (ADS) CEO Duff Johnson will chair the North American chapter of the PDF/A Competence Center, the industry group dedicated to promoting awareness and adoption of ISO 19005, the international standard for archive-quality PDF electronic documents.

"The PDF/A Competence Center has led the way in promoting PDF/A throughout Europe," said Johnson. "Quite frankly, it's time for North America to catch up, and I'm pleased that we can add our own resources to help make the case for PDF/A, advancing awareness and adoption of this critical technology here in North America."

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
