This week in PDF has seen updates to a PDF creation suite and PDF components for creation and document capture, along with the release of a PDF editor designed to check and fix files for printing.
First up, Global Graphics has updated its PDF desktop and server creation bundle. Jaws PDF Server Suite 5.0 consolidates these functions to provide an easy-to-use, centralized PDF file generation solution. In addition to creating PDF documents, desktop users can manipulate, annotate, merge and manage PDF forms. The new version adds support for 64-bit Windows operating systems and one-click structured PDF creation from Microsoft Office 2007. For more information, visit the official product page.
In other update news, a pair of developer components have also been recently upgraded. The first, a .NET component for creating PDF documents, comes from Aspose. Version 184.108.40.206 adds support for PDF/A-1b, a PDF archival standard that ensures the faithful visual reproduction of created documents. The new version also adds feature allowing hyphenation based on custom dictionary entries. Check out www.aspose.com for more detailed notes on the release.
The other shiny new update this week was made to ABBYY's PDF capture toolkit. FineReader Engine 9.0 offers improved recognition accuracy and performance, particularly in processing multipage documents. An enhanced core technology platform combined with additional improvements such as significantly increased scalability, new technology for Asian language recognition and ready-made interface tools have all been integrated into the new version. You can read more at the ABBYY website.
Finally, Enfocus has released a brand-spanking-new PDF editing app to the desktop. PitStop Extreme is a standalone, PDF editor designed from the ground up to allow quick checking and correcting of PDF files. PitStop Extreme also incorporates Enfocus' preflighting engine and Certified PDF technology to prevent editing errors and safeguard the file. The new product is also standards-compliant, supporting PDF/X and the Ghent PDF Workgroup specifications. Additionally, its intuitive interface minimizes user training requirements. The product is available for both Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows environments. PitStop Extreme will be demonstrated at IFRA Expo 2008, 27 to 30 October 2008 at the RAI exhibition centre in Amsterdam (stand 10635). Once the product has been released, interested parties can visit the Enfocus website to download a fully functional trial version.
