This week in PDF: PDF to and from paper

September 27, 2007

This week in PDF has seen an update to a scanning and extraction product, features added to a web application for delivering print-ready documents and the release of a new developer library allowing individualized PDF forms to be generated from proprietary applications.

First up, ABBYY has released an update to its desktop-based product for paper capture and archival. ABBYY FlexiCapture 8.0 Professional extracts data from paper forms or other documents, providing accurate data for input into databases. After scanning or importing images from hot olders,FlexiCapture classifies the pages by document type. It then locates, extracts and validates the data using rules or database look-up. Extracted data is verified and then exported to external databases, files, or business applications and document management systems. Unstructured documents can be automatically indexed and saved as searchable PDF/PDF-A files for archiving purposes. Check out the ABBYY web site for more detailed information.

Looking at conversion in the other direction (i.e. moving from paper-to-PDF to PDF-paper), Integration New Media, Inc. (INM), has announced the addition of new features to its web application for the delivery of print-ready documents. Officially launched earlier this year, INM Reach is designed to provide content publishers with an elegant way to deliver highly formatted, print-quality documents to users over the web. Such documents may include print-quality marketing collateral, reports, catalogs, flyers and magazines. INM Reach allows users to interact naturally with the posted documents, virtually flipping pages, zooming in on content and searching for keywords within the document's content. More information can be found on the official web site.

Last but not least, UNIVERSE Software GmbH hasps announced its new PDF forms-related developer library. The pdf-FieldMerge LIB package is targeted specifically at software suppliers that wish to generate individualized PDF forms from their own software applications. Form fields may be filled with data during the merge process, which cannot be altered afterwards, while fields in other parts of the form can be filled out or corrected manually by the user. The advantage of pdf-FieldMerge is that it produces secure, tamper-proof PDF documents while supporting fields that can be filled out or corrected using Adobe's free Acrobat Reader.
