This week in PDF: PitStop Pro Acrobat 9-compatible, PDF/A test suite released

September 11, 2008

This week in PDF has seen Acrobat 9 compatibility added to a well-known preflight application, along with the launches of a graphic arts survey, a PDF/A validation testing package and a PDF mapping suite.

First up, Enfocus has launched a comprehensive graphic arts survey, its fourth since 2000. The survey's goal is to identify common issues, software packages used and observed trends. Participants will each enter the draw to win an iPod Nano, along with having the opportunity to influence future product development. To go into the draw, simply complete the survey.

In other Enfocus news, the PDF preflight and automation vendor has also announced that its flagship product is now fully compatible with Acrobat 9. Coming hot on the heels of the product's recent major upgrade, the update is being made available at no charge to current users of PitStop Professional 08. Both the full version and a fully-functional trial version are available for download from the Enfocus website.

On the PDF/A front, the PDF/A Competence Center has released the Isartor test suite. The collection of 200 PDF files have been created to systematically break all of the requirements for PDF/A-1b. This in turn allows developers to test the quality of PDF/A validation tools to ensure that they can detect all such violations. Isartor can be freely downloaded from the official PDF/A Competence Center site.

Last but not least, Global Map Systems has announced the release of their LOGIQ PDF product suite, which includes GeoDataEmbed and GeoDataVu. Map-makers can use the software to create PDF maps that allow for powerful spatial analysis features typically found in products like ESRI's ArcMap.

According to the press release:

LOGIQ PDF maps offer advanced spatial analysis features such as point-on-geometry analysis, attribute statistics, frequency tables and export to shapefile. LOGIQ PDF is a patent-pending technology that embeds the table schema, feature geometry, and other components of GIS data directly into the logical content of a PDF file representing a published map. By embedding data such as field definitions, data types, spatial references, attributes, and actual geometry in map coordinates, the PDF file contains all the essential GIS data behind the map, making it a medium of data exchange, and enabling spatial analysis. These PDFs can be combined with existing PDF map books to extend even more GIS functionality to map users.

LOGIQ PDF is available for immediate download at the introductory sales price of US$399 at

That's it for this week. Watch this space!
