This week in PDF: Home sweet home

March 30, 2006

Ahh, home sweet home. Last week, the laid-back golfers' paradise of Savannah played host to Enfocus's Spring Retreat, previously mentioned in this column. Despite the idyllic surrounds, the meetings kept a small corp of printing industry types and press on their collective toes, touting a swag of soon-to-be-released products -- including the pending update to standard-bearer PitStop Professional.

Major changes include PitStop Pro's integration of Enfocus's own PDF libraries and a streamlined interface for Action Lists, which allow for automation of common tasks. For a more in-depth take on the changes in PitStop Professional 7, check out Don Fluckinger's news piece from Monday.

Standardization is again in the air, with BFO and Aquaforest both announcing product support for the brand-new PDF/A standard, with Quickcut announcing Ghent PDF Workgroup compliance. Finally, Visual Integrity has updated its PDF-to-CAD conversion product and PixelPlanet celebrates its ten-year anniversary with a software giveaway.

BFO (The Big Faceless Organization), a supplier of Java reporting solutions, has announced the release of the Big Faceless PDF Library version 2.6.7, which adds support for the newly-minted PDF/A standard for long-term electronic archival, also known as "ISO-19005:2005" (catchy, huh?) More information and a free trial are available from the BFO web site.

Another early-supporter of PDF/A is Aquaforest, whose TIFF Junction product is now able to provide searchable and image-only PDF/A compliant files from TIFF images and image-only PDF documents. For more on this, check out the Aquaforest web site.

Quickcut, a provider of digital advertising workflow solutions, has announced that the latest version of its QuickPrint workflow software has achieved compliance from the Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG). Further, GWG has certified QuickPrint for its ability to modify PDF files created in other applications in order to achieve compliance with GWG specifications.

So, are the nice folks at PixelPlanet really offering free PDF security software that doesn't require Acrobat? Yep -- well, assuming you're happy to log in to during the ten-week promotional period (April 1 until June 10) and register, that is. Upon registration, visitors will be emailed a valid serial code and be able to activate their product.

Last-but-not-least, Visual integrity has released version 6.1 of its mature PDF-to-CAD conversion product. pdf2cad 6.1 improves upon its predecessor's reporting, support for embedded images, and expands the number of user-definable options. pdf2cad is currently available, with free trial versions available from
