This week in PDF sees a pair of PDF print-related upgrades, with an updated PDF Library and a PDF compression tool to round out the week.

First up, let's look at the print-related releases. German company HELIOS Software has released a new piece of software that allows for PDF preflight via the integration of callas software's pdfinspektor3 technology. The product automatically inspects PDF files as they are created, streamlining prepress workflows. For more details, check out HELIOS Software's Web site.

Also on the print side, Lucid Dream Software has introduced a free PDF plug-in to its I-Trap software. I-PDF adds a special trapping layer to existing PDF files, and boasts such features as 'Step and Repeat', 'Pre-Imposition Trapping' and 'Preflighting'. The company Web site offers additional information on the release and hosts the related software downloads.

Continuing the file-optimization theme, XChange International has released version 4.0 of its PDF compression software for Mac OS X. PDF Shrink 4.0 reduces the size of PDF files, compressing images within the PDF file, removing unused elements such as metadata and thumbnails, eliminating duplicate images, compressing non-image parts of a PDF file and optimizing image resolution. The software is multi-threaded for maximum performance on single and dual processor Macs. Full information about the new release is available from the XChange International Web site.

Finally, the UK's Big Faceless Organization (BFO) has updated its PDF library. Version 2.6.11 of the Java class library offers enhanced performance when converting PDF documents into TIFF images, and is being offered as a free upgrade to existing clients. More on the product and a free trial version of the library can be found at big.faceless.org.

That's it for this week! Until next time...
