This week in PDF, the ink dries on a pair of technology partnership pacts, Intergraph provides some direction for cartographers, and ceTe Software .NETs an update to its PDF creation widget. If that weren't enough, the busy folks at LinkTek have delivered a new link repair solution while the masters of the UNIVERSE (Software, that is) have added Acrobat 7 compatibility to that company's password-recovery software.
First up, Enfocus Software is again in the spotlight, announcing two technology partnership deals relating to its new super workflow automation solution. The deals should see the integration of both remote virtual proofing and imposition functionality into Enfocus's PitStop Automate via seamless integration with ICS's ICS Remote Director and Ultimate's Impostrip OnDemand Digital. Quality control and error-correction is just as important in the electronic document arena, however, and that's where LinkTek's new offering could come in very handy. The software vendor, which specializes in data migration solutions, has just announced an update to its link maintenance and repair program. LinkFixerPlus is a plug-in for Adobe Acrobat designed to ensure that hyperlinks, image links and links to other files within PDF documents are automatically updated when files are moved or renamed. The newest release enhances the tool's ability to move and rename Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, AutoCAD, InDesign, PageMaker, HTML and Windows shortcut files without causing broken links. Full details can be found on the LinkFixerPlus Web site.
Automatically fixing links may be the cure to a common headache, but what if you can't even get into your PDF documents? Well, if UNIVERSE Software has anything to say about it, "No password, no problem!" If you no longer have the password to some of your older PDF documents, pdf-Recover Professional 3.6 can be used to remove PDF passwords to grant access to such documents. Be careful how you use it, though! This product is designed to restore access to files that you should be able to legitimately access and not to crack the security of commercial or confidential content belonging to others. The new version adds compatibility with version 7 of Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Designer. More information can be found on the UNIVERSE Software Web site.
If all this is a bit much for you, perhaps a PDF map would be helpful? Luckily, Intergraph Corporation and TerraGo Technologies has recently made MAP2PDF versions for Intergraph product lines -- GeoMedia and Digital Cartographic Studio (DCS) -- generally available. GeoPDF embeds geospatially referenced data for map coordinate readouts, distances and bearing information in an easy to understand PDF format. The new MAP2PDF will export geospatial data from GeoMedia or DCS to a georegistered PDF with layers and feature attributes. This GeoPDF can be easily distributed and used in connected or disconnected modes with TerraGo's free Adobe Reader software. Users are then able to view maps, toggle layer visibility, query attributes, display coordinates, GPS track and create redlines and notes. More information can be found on the TerraGo Tech Web site.
Continuous upheaval is what makes watching the technology industry so exciting. David vs. Goliath battles are waged every day, with startups often winning against much larger businesses. For years and years, many have predicted the decline of the PDF given its age and perceived disadvantages. Today, with the PDF losing ground in emerging areas like mobile and eBooks, the calls for its ultimate demise are growing louder.
OK, so you want to stamp your document. Maybe you need to give reviewers some advice about the document's status or sensitivity. This tip from author Ted Padova demonstrates how to add stamps with the Stamp Tool along with related comments.
