The latest ubiquitous tool to use for your PDF endeavors is Free-OCR.com an online tool for extracting text from any image you upload.

The services is free and does not require email registration.

Users can upload image files including JPG, GIF, TIFF, BMP or PDF (first page only) and extract images that are less than 2 MB.

Additional image restrictions include no wider or higher than 5000 pixels and users have a limit of 10 image uploads per hour.

The program also extracts images from multi-column text and supports numerous languages.

The program can be downloaded at the developer's website.
