The approaching July 4 national holiday weekend is traditionally a time across the United States for flying the American flag and for celebrating with fireworks.

If you're looking for some printable PDFs to create quick-and-dirty versions of the 'Stars and Stripes,' we suspect a number of the downloadable versions first cited here a couple years ago -- including the one shown below, offered by Boston.com -- remain available.

On the fireworks theme, another PDF worth reviewing -- at least by those intending to put flame to fuse during the Independence Day weekend -- is the 2003 Fireworks Annual Report [PDF: 117kb] by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which notes that last year there were approximately 9,300 emergency room visits because of injuries from fireworks. Ouch!

Boston Globe FlagTo avoid injuries, the agency offers tips on staying safe when lighting fireworks, such as:

  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
  • Adults should always supervise fireworks activities.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully functioned.
  • Never allow young children to ignite fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Light one item at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them in metal or glass containers.
