Forgot to mention I'm doing this in VB on the user's workstation to combine different file formats into pdf and adding headers, etc.

Opening the Word doc with a call to the Acrobat 5 IAC api will convert it automatically but the output was unsatisfactory (don't have details). Maybe this is improved with Acrobat 6.0 but we're not using 6 yet.
