Topic: Ignore Fields in Tab Order

Prior to Acrobat v6, setting a field property to "Read Only" caused that field to be ignored in the Tab Order. Version 6 no longer behaves that way.

Furthermore, Acrobat 6 does not allow explicit Tab Order sequencing. In fact, even Ted Padova, in his book "Acrobat 6 PDF Bible", pg 832, indicates that "Setting tab order in Acrobat 6 is a step backward in development."

I have a fairly complex form, with numerous fields. Acrobat 6 does not allow me to simply Set Tab Order of the fields like previous versions of Acrobat did. I have NO option to explicitly Set Tab Order. Therefore, I must use the Page Properties >> Tab Order >> Use Row Order. This accomplished what I need it to with regard to general field fill-in order. However, the calculated fields (which are set to Read Only) are NOT ignored in the Tab Order. This confuses the user. As, the cursor is NOT visible in the calculated/Read Only fields, while tabbing through them. However, Acrobat 6 is following the Row Order of the fields on the page.

OBJECTIVE
I need to follow the basic tab order established by the Use Row Order Property, while ignoring calculated/Read Only fields from the tab order. There must be a way to do this, without rebuilding the entire field structure & JavaScripting of this complex form.

By the way, I've already tried opening the form in Acrobat version 5 and re-establishing the tab order. The moment you open the form in Acrobat 6 (which is required for the JavaScripts in this form) it ignores the tab settings from Acrobat 5 and goes back the same behavior it had before.

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you.
Dana

Two Passwords Are Better Than One: The Low-Down On PDF Security

For people who don't spend their time looking at PDF files in text editors*, PDF security is a sometimes misunderstood beast.

For example, those document restrictions that PDF files sometimes have -- no Printing, Content Copying, Page Extraction, etc -- are essentially useless unless the PDF also has a User Password.
