Topic: Acrobat reader "Temporary File" Error

I'm not an experienced PDF user. I'm just a sad college student whose professors use PDF format assignments all the time, and I'm seeking help. Here's my problem: I have Windows XP on my six-month-old custom HP computer. I've had Acrobat Reader 6.0 on it for most of that time. In the past week, Reader stopped opening documents and started freezing part of the screen when it tried to open. I've uninstalled it, defragmented, run ScanDisk, and deleted Temporary Files. Then, after rebooting, I downloaded Acrobat Reader 5.0.5. Now, should I attempt to open a .pdf assignment, it tells me that "A temporary file could not be opened." WHY?? Can anyone help me??
