Please bear in mind that using the preflight function in Acrobat 6 is different to understanding the errors.

Enfocus have a guide which points you in the right direction - albeit biased towards their application. It does however explain in details the errors which can be produced in a PDF .... OPI, transfer functions, halftones, RGB, LAB, ICC etc. etc.
