Connie,
In general, it's not possible to ftp a file to a printer. This is a
feature of the printer that you are using. Unfortunately there is no
standard way to print to a networked printer (actually, there is a
standard way, but not every networked printer implements this: lpr).
This means that you have to work with your specific printer to find out
what it supports.
Once you know how to send the files to your printer, you can use
Ghostscript to convert your PDF jobs to PCL. Make sure that you use a
recent version of Ghostscript (the newer the better). You may have to
play around with the gs options to find out which PCL 'type' is best for
your printer. If you start gs with the -h switch, it will print all
output formats it supports. If your printer is compatible with a
LaserJet5, ysou would use something like this:

gs -sDEVICE=lj5mono -sOutputFile= -q -dSAFER -dNOPAUSE
-r600 file.pdf

Replace with your "real" output file (or - if you want to
pipe the output directly to a command)
