Topic: watermarking on the server side

Okay, here is the situation. I work for a role-playing game publishing company.
We want to do sales of PDF products, and the bosses are worried about piracy, and we all know how effective DRM measures actually (not very), especially when compared against the annoyance factor that would be generated by our purchasers.
So, I came up with this idea, but I have no idea if it can be implemented or how to implement it.
The idea is pretty simple. Upon purchase, the server needs to watermark the pdf that the purchaser is going to download.
Basically, what I want to do is to have it insert some text (kinda like a digital signature) into the pdf on every page (across the bottom would be just fine). The information would contain the users Name, order number, and date of purchase.
This is the visible portion. The next step would be to encode that same information into the form in a manner that the user cannot see (thus if the pdf ever turns up on Kazzaa, we can check and see who purchased it and shared it out or at least trace it down to who shared it out). I was thinking hidden, locked form fields might work for this.
Is what I am wanting to do possible? Is there a company that already has something like this setup? Got contact information for them?
