Have you tried uninstalling and/or removing the Adobe program and/or folder? I have found in the past that the program folder may be corrupted and need to be removed, then reboot, THEN reinstall a new copy of Reader.
Also, since you did suffer damage, you may want to run Error Checking on the hard drive to make sure there is not FAT problems. I recommend both the options be chosen if you are running Win2k/XP:
1. Automatically fix file system errors
2. Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors
