Sandy,
It is possible that after your virus, your system has become unstable. One way to correct this is to run a repair from the installation CD or restoration CD. The repair process will replace any files that are missing or damaged. If you installed WinXP from a MS WinXP CD, then you can use that CD to run the repair. If you have a branded computer, e.g., Dell, HP, IBM, etc., you should go to their website or tech support to find out how to initiate a repair.
You can go to either of these sites to get information on the repair process.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341 (Choose Method 2: Reinstall Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD)
Of course, you can always Google for '"Windows XP" Repair' and research your heart out.
Once you have performed the repair, you may need to reinstall some of your software, including Adobe, but it should work this time. If, however, you system still refuses to function correctly, then it's last resort time. Backup all your data (I prefer the Ghost Image method) and format the drive and reinstall Windows XP.
