Topic: duplicate fonts and file size

I am creating a single PDF from multiple (about 15) Word files (using Mac
OS X 10.3.3 and Acrobat Professional 6.0.1). All fonts need to be
embedded in the PDF.
If I create a PDF from each Word file and combine them, I end up with a
large file with multiple occurrences of each font and fonts account for
over 80% of the file size.
If I create a postscript file from each Word file, then distill them together
as a singe PDF, all fonts are not embedded (even though "Embed all
fonts" is checked in the distiller). If I force the embedding of any missing
fonts during the distillation, duplication occurs and the file size explodes.
I've tried the "Reduce file size" and "PDF Optimizer" tools without effect.
Any way to prevent font duplication in the distillation process, or to
consolidate duplicated fonts in the resulting PDF?
Thanks!
Richard
