However, one thing you can do to address this is to make sure you
do NOT subset the fonts in each Word file (set subset to 0%). Initially
the PDFs for each document will be larger, due to the full embeds..BUT when
you merge them all together and then do a "Save As" from Acrobat, it is
able to determine the duplication of FULL embeds and clean things up. (it
can't do this with subsets, hence the recommendation).

I would also recommend our PDF Enhancer software
( which is able to reduce the size of PDF
documents using a variety of techniques.
