I'm not 100% certain this option exists for Word 97 (I use 2000 mostly) but it should be there.
Go to tools/options and select the compatibility tag. Make sure the "use printer metrics to lay out document" is NOT checked. All your reflow problems should now vanish and you should have no problem moving files between machines.
As an example, using this method I've recently transferred a Word 2000 file on my old PC to my new PC running Word 2003. Not one line reflowed.
