Topic: Reduce and Convert pmd file to gif, jpg, psd or png file

I'm trying to reduce a large 24"x24" pmd Pagemaker file to approximately webpage size, and convert it to an image file. The pmd includes images and articles (I guess this is what the text is called). First question is, "Can this be done and, if so, how?"

I tried converting to a pdf, hoping I could get to an image file from there or at least post it on the web as a pdf. When I convert to a pdf, the text turns to black lines. Second question is, "Why isn't the text converting as text and what should I do to make sure it converts as text?"
