Topic: Adobe Acrobat File Association Problems
Conf: (P-PDF) Acrobat 6.0, Msg: 121012

This is a long one, sorry...

I work in an environment with the following platforms and Adobe products:

- Windows NT 4.0 SP6
- Windows XP Sp1

- Adobe Reader 5.05
- Adobe Reader 6.0
- Adobe Acrobat Standard 5.05
- Adobe Acrobat Standard 6.0

We recently deployed the Adobe Acrobat 6.01, and 6.02 Updates. What we
found after running the updates was that the .pdf file associations were
lost. In other words, end users can no longer open .pdf files. One
obstacle we have is that our end users do not have admin rights and cannot
freely change the associations as needed.
One thing I tried was creating a batch file (c:\ Assoc
.pdf=pdf_auto_file), that would change the file association in the
registry This would change the value data found in
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf, from 'AcroExch.Document', to 'pdf_auto_file'. The

problem with this option was that although the user was able to open a pdf

file, they were prompted by a dialog box stating:

'You cannot currently view Adobe pdf files from within your web browser
due to a configuration problem. Would you like Acrobat to fix the
configuration?'

If the end user clicks yes, the registry value reverts back to
'AcroExch.Document'
and the user once again loses the association. And of course saying no
to the dialog will not allow them to open a pdf with the browser. THis is

an option that they want to keep.
Another obstacle we have is that we have 15k - 20k clients globally. It
is not really an option to have site support manually re associate all the

clients. What I need is an automated solution. Any information you can
give me in this regard will be greatly appreciated. We use SMS to deploy
applications. Ideally I would like to incorporate your solution into a
script that could be pushed via SMS. I am really in a bind here. Please
help. Thanks!!!

Two Passwords Are Better Than One: The Low-Down On PDF Security

For people who don't spend their time looking at PDF files in text editors*, PDF security is a sometimes misunderstood beast.

For example, those document restrictions that PDF files sometimes have -- no Printing, Content Copying, Page Extraction, etc -- are essentially useless unless the PDF also has a User Password.
