Topic: Acrobat 6 Distiller aborts processing PostScript files

I am using Acrobat 6.0 Standard (with the 6.0.1 update, currently on XP Pro but other versions of Windows will be used by our clients), and am trying to create PostScript files from our own application (which only prints through the Windows Spooler). Once I am successful in creating compatible PostScript files I plan to run these files through the Distiller to create PDF files. I have an ASN Developer agreement and the SDK when I can work out this part of the problem.
Using the "Adobe PDF" printer directly is not a viable option using Acrobat 6 since we are no longer able to control the destination PDF file name without user intervention. My ultimate goal is to run the Distiller in the background using the Distiller API and control the output without user interaction.
After reviewing many threads on this forum and on Adobe's forum and chasing down all the information I could find, I decided that perhaps the easiest way to do this was to simply change the PORT used by the "Adobe PDF" printer, that is created by installing Acrobat, to use the FILE port. This does indeed create the PostScript files. However, when I attempt to run these files through the Distiller, the Distiller often aborts with a DrWatson screen. Sometimes attempting the same file will be successful and sometimes not. Sometimes a one page report works and a similar one page report will fail. Sometimes a report with many pages will work and a similar many page report will fail.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a "bug" in Distiller?
Any help would be greatly appreciated since our clients can no longer easily find Acrobat 5 and I am trying to modify our application in such a way as to minimize changes in user interaction.
Thanks for your consideration.
