I spent several hours on the phone to Adobe yesterday looking for
help, let's just say that he ended up not charging me the $30 incident
fee.
I have a 161 page document. It's a catalog for a medical supply
company. They will print a few copies but the primary purpose for this
document is an interactive PDF that will be downloaded from the co's
web site.
We did it in Quark 4 last year. I made my PDF the old fashioned way
and set all of the links and bookmarks one at a time from Acrobat 5.
There are between 15 and 18 links on each page. The finished file was
just over 8 MB.
This year we have G5's and Adobe CS. You can imagine how excited I
was when I learned that most links could be created in IND on the
master pages. One small problem, IND can't export the file. I can do it
a few pages at a time and the put them all together in Acrobat 6 and
after deleting the multiple copies of bookmarks this is not a problem.
Until I save the file and it's 18MB.
I have run Acrobat's PDF Optimizer and tried Reduce File Size. The
only time this has worked the Optimizer rasterized all of my type (not
good, this thing needs to be searchable) and the resulting file was still
12 MB.
Audit Space Usage indicates that 75% of my document is made up of
something called Document Overhead. The Adobe guy said that's the
problem and I should look for a third party extension or utility that
will make a better PDF. And so I come to you seeking a
recommendation.
thanks,
Michelle
