May I suggest that the "crappy" old VIAO should be included in your hunt as one of the usual suspects. Have you tried installing on a more recent vintage PC with Win XP rather than your veteran machine? Any well deserved kicks might well be applied to the laptop or at least contribute it to one of the fine Swiss museums.
I am aware that this did not help.
