Is there a way to edit the text in default error message boxes?

For example I have a field set to date format mm/dd/yyyy. If a user enters the year as two digits, the error message is very user un-friendly (Invalid date time: please ensure the date/time exists, Field [Text Date] should match format mm/dd/yyyy).

Can this be edited or do I need to put in some custom format script - and if that is the case can anyone point me at some examples I can look at?
