I was thinking of something a little more user-friendly such as:

"Sorry the date you have entered is in the incorrect format. Please enter it as mm/dd/yyyy, ensuring that the year is entered as a four digit number (i.e. 2005)."

I am dealing with a very low level audience that has minimal experience of completing forms online and would like to give them as much information in as friendly wording as possible.
