Topic: .pdf files on Web open in Adobe Acrobat Standard and not Reader

Hi All,

I have an entire department that runs Adobe Acrobat Standard 6.0 and Adobe Reader 6.01. Whenever any staff member clicks on a .pdf link via a web site, it opens in Acrobat Standard 6.0 and not Reader.

I've tried re-setting the file associations for .pdf from Adobe Acrobat to Adobe Reader, but it doesn't "stick", and the problem persists. I've tried repairing Reader, but the problem persists.

I had a staff member previously who had this problem (different dept.) and installing Reader 7.0 solved the problem (I was prompted to choose Reader or Adobe Acrobat to open .pdf files after install), but I do not want to do this for this department.

I found the same problem posted in the Adobe forum. One solution was to leave Reader *open* whenever you're opening a .pdf file from the web. That is an *unacceptable* solution. Another solution was to check/edit the registry ([HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe]) to make sure Reader was the path, and not Adobe Acrobat. I did this (it was, in fact, set to Acrobat) but the problem persists.

When I save the .pdf file to the desktop, it saves as "fileupload_details.pdf" and opens in Reader fine.
When I try and open it via a link in a web browswer (IE 6), and it opens in Acrobat Standard, the file name reads "Fileupload_details[1] - Linked File".

All machines running Windows XP Pro/Office XP Pro.

Thanks in Advance!

Two Passwords Are Better Than One: The Low-Down On PDF Security

For people who don't spend their time looking at PDF files in text editors*, PDF security is a sometimes misunderstood beast.

For example, those document restrictions that PDF files sometimes have -- no Printing, Content Copying, Page Extraction, etc -- are essentially useless unless the PDF also has a User Password.
