I did exactly this. I upgraded from Version 5 standard to version 7 professional. You'll either need 5 installed (automatically uninstalled) or else the serial number and CD from 5 to do the upgrade.

I had to reinstall, so I've done it both ways above. Both worked, and both had to be activated. The activation process was a breeze compared to Micro$oft's activation. You can just type the numbers into the phone (no internet access) or let it activate automatically (with internet access).

Again, I've done it both ways. Took less than 2 minutes to activate by phone.

Of course, 7 is buggier than 5, so I might be going back.
