I'm a pattern designer and currently have my patterns created in PDF to allow customers to receive the file via email. While the consept is great (saves me printing, mailing costs and gives them a price break and almost instant satisfaction) it does create a problem of security. Meaning a customer will now have that file on their computer and be able to forward the PDF pattern on to friends, etc.
I'm trying to figure out a way to create the PDF files on my website and make them password protected. Such as allowing the customer to print a pattern directly from my website. Gaining access to the file via a password that changes with each new purchase of that pattern. Or a password that is time sensitive, meaning they have to print the pattern within say 48 hours. This way when they purchase a pattern they will be given a password and access to the page where the PDF file opens and could print it out, but it would not be saved on their computers and therefore couldn't be forwarded to another party.
I found this program that sounds like it will do what I am looking for, however the price is WAY out of my range. Does anyone know a way to password protect a webpage that contains a PDF? I guess I'm not looking to protect the PDF itself per say, unless that is financially feasible. But the next option would be to password protect the webpage where the PDF will be printed from. But not sure where to start in finding info or a webdeveloper that could do that. I need it to be self-sufficient in that once the pattern is purchase (when they click the Purchase button) it will automatically give them a password and a link to open the PDF and print it. Then automatically give the next purchaser a different password and the same link. Am I making sense?
Here's that software I am talking about, but again it's way out of my budget. Thank you for any help anyone can offer.
PDF Security
Secure & DRM protect your PDF documents
PDF Security category covers document security and DRM (Digital Rights Management). Document security focuses in the protection of content fidelity. E.g. document security products can be used to prohibit the extraction of text or images or disallow printing. By contrast, DRM focuses on limiting the distribution of documents and the protection of intellectual property.
