What seems to be a simple common requirment is turning out to be a nightmare. Any expert advise would truly be appreciated.

Basically I have a website that users log into and can download an application. I am using reader extensions and Designer 7 to create the PDF so users can save the applications and submit them over the web via Http: post.

The problem is that I need to know which user out of hundread is submitting the application. So, in order to do so when they download the app I want include the User ID in the PDF.

FYI: Purchasing Forms server is cost prohibitave.

Does any one have an idea on how I can accomplish this? I know I can provide users with a link that contains a query string and populate a field, but that will not work as the user may download the file without opening it. So when they go to open it, there will be no query string.

A few othe questions.
1. One idea I had was to edit the XDP version of the file on the fly and then automaticaly convert it to PDF. This sounds like a perfect solutions since it would give me access to the entire document, but from what I understand you cannot convert from XDP to PDF without forms server or opening it in Designer and saving as PDF. Curious if anyone has found a way to accomplish this without forms server.

2. Another idea was to access meta data on the fly. I know there are tools that will allow you to edit the Meta Data on the fly in which case I could edit a field like Author or something on the fly. If I do this however, I need the PDF to have access to the data such as allowing me to include a javascript to read the Meta data and populate a form field that is included in the Http: post.

If anyone has any ideas I appreciate the help.
