I don't know what it's being printed from, and I'm not sure what you mean by "hotfolder".

This PDF had to be sent to a publication that apparently uses Quark.
They were importing this PDF into Quark, and noticing the black boxes once it was imported.

Thanks for the tip on the PDF 1.4 compatibility. I'll try to find out if this compatibility can be controlled in InDesign, and if drop-shadows can be flattened there too. -- KP
