Yes, Encoding is a MAJOR piece of
understanding text and fonts with PDF...

First, you REALLY need to read the PDF
Reference about Fonts and Encoding - that is
going to help you better understand how Fonts,
Encoding and text in the content stream all work together.

Once you understand that, you'll see
that you need to know the TextState of each
operation in question to be able to make your determinations..
