Topic: Checkboxes in PDF

I am working with an existing pdf file, in which I have used Acrobat to create form fields, including checkboxes. My objective is to populate the form fields in the existing pdf, to create a final new pdf file with the data.
I'm using a perl module(CAM::PDF) to parse the pdf and populate the text fields with data from a web page. However, I am unable to correctly check the checkbox form fields.
I've confirmed the export value ("Yes"), but when I simply put this value into the associated checkbox field, it does not put the check in the box.
How can I get the true value of the checkbox, and therefore place the check mark in the associated checkbox field of the final pdf file output? I'm currently using perl to do this, so if you know of a module or perl solution that would be great.
I am familiar with PHP as well - so a PHP solution would work as well.
Thanks in advance.
